Captain Richard "Rick" Etsell

Captain Richard "Rick" EtsellCaptain Rick Etsell is a capable, experienced, responsible and reliable vessel operator with extensive boating and sailing experience since childhood in the waters of Washington, British Columbia and Alaska. He has owned and operated a large variety of vessels including a 65' classic fantail motor yacht. He is an expert in boat design, construction, and onboard systems as a result of his successful naval architecture career. A graduate of University of Washington with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Captain Etsell obtained his USCG Master's License so that he could spend summers on the water as a captain rather than behind a desk or computer. Captain Etsell holds Red Cross First Aid and CPR certificates. He is very knowledgeable on classic yachts and historic vessels and was featured in the 2004 documentary on classic yachts entitled "Throwbacks" by John Sabella and Associates.

Married and living in Anacortes, Washington north of Seattle, and the father of two adult children, Captain Etsell is responsible for the operation of the MV Olympus and maintains the yacht to the owner's exacting standards.

Chef Monica Miller

Chef Monica MillerChef Monica Miller joined the crew of the MV Olympus in 2012. She is a self taught chef who is a Seattle native and continues to live in Seattle. She has two fabulous daughters and two delightful grandsons. A graduate of the University of Washington with a BA in Humanities, Chef Miller's travels have taken her to Europe, Hawaii, Mexico, and Alaska. As a proud 2011 graduate of the respected Farestart Culinary Arts Training Program in Seattle, Chef Miller excelled while working with renowned chefs who mentored her in the creative and precision aspects of catering, presentation, and pastry.

Chef Miller has nearly a decade of culinary experience in the commercial and private maritime arena on the waters of Alaska aboard crab boats, salmon tenders, and luxury yachts. Previously she has worked as a deckhand, but those days are behind her. She has consistently exceeded fisherman's expectations on the F/V Scandies Rose as a cook and baker in Bristol Bay and SE Alaska. She won a standing ovation for her chocolate mousse in Glacier Bay, Alaska on the yacht M/V Quest. Private clients have enjoyed her custom designed meals and desserts.

Chef Miller is a fan of organic, beautiful, and delicious a-la-minute meals. Her love for adventurous cooking and creative baking feeds her passion to delight guests' preferences. Whether roasted quinoa with feta and greens, pan- seared halibut with roasted red pepper sauce, or a juicy rib eye steak, Chef Miller looks forward to welcoming you to the community aboard the MV Olympus to delight your palate, refresh your spirit, and infuse your food with love.


Steve Full, First Mate

Steve Full, First Mate The first mate position changes annually. One of prior First Mates was Steve Full, born in Yarmouth Maine to a Master Mariner father who spent his career as an oil tanker captain. His grandfather is a marine surveyor and still surveys wooden boats.

Steve is an athlete, having attended two private prep schools where he excelled in basketball and crew. He was recruited to row at University of Washington, where he rowed for four years and assisted the team with winning two national championships including the Varsity Men's National Championship in 2007. He is working as a rowing coach at UW in addition to his duties aboard Olympus. His interests include sports nutrition, marketing and obviously sports and wooden boats!


Diane L. VanDerbeek, Stewardess

Diane L. VanDerbeekYour onboard hostess is the yacht's owner. A Seattle native who has owned the Olympus since 1994; Ms. VanDerbeek is a former family law lawyer who has let her love of the water carry her to working aboard the MV Olympus during the summer months. The daughter of a Fisheries Biologist, her attraction to the sea and all it has to offer is genetic. Having spent her life aboard boats and cruising, she is very familiar with the Northwest waters where the MV Olympus cruises and can provide excellent local knowledge and tour guide services if requested.

Ms. VanDerbeek spends her time managing the business of the MV Olympus and owns a Pocock Wooden Rowing shell which she rows at least three times a week. With the sudden loss of her husband, John, during 2009, Ms. VanDerbeek has elected to spend more time aboard the yacht and is looking forward to welcoming you and your guests aboard while being responsible for the interior maintenance of the yacht during your cruise and serving Chef Monica's fine cuisine. A wine expert, Ms. VanDerbeek will be sure that the yacht is fully stocked with your favorite vintages during your cruise.
